Computer Chess
Under Construction: any developer of a chess engine who wants a link here, please e-mail.   I
would be glad to put a link here for you.  Also will try to keep updates on computer chess
tournaments as well as computer chess games. (computer vs computer).  This page will
probably grow slowly as the chess links page.  I know there are many links to free chess
engines, but would not want to just put links here without the developer's permission.  Keep
an eye on this page.

CCRL (Computer Chess Rating List) Top 5 as of May 2, 2008

CCRL Rating Lists for Computer Engines

1 Rybka 2.3.2a                 64-bit 4CPU               3130
2 Naum 3                          64-bit 4CPU               3077
3 Zappa Mexico              64-bit 4CPU               3038
4 Deep Shredder 11       64-bit 4CPU               3026
5 Hiarcs 12                                 4CPU               3022

Please check the website for FAR more detailed information about matches between
engines, results, performance percentages and many other engines as well.  I've only
put the top 5 rated engines here and wanted to point out this page to computer chess
fans.  Although Zappa Mexico beat Rybka 2.3.2a in an 8 game match, overall, Rybka has
the advantage over many more games.  8 games was hardly enough to compare two
engines.  This list also shows the up and comer "Naum 3" at number 2!  Also remember
these are games between computers only, no human vs computer games.  Just battles of
silicon.  Not silicone (although that would be interesting).   As you can see, 4CPU
computers with 64-bit processing are the norm now.  There are also 8 core computer run
engines out there as well, a small potato like myself cannot compete with these
monsters, some of which cost as much as a nice car!  But it's fun, that's what matters.
There are other rating lists out there as well, I will do research and put, (I believe there's
one more very complete one), it up here for comparison, I may be wrong...
Above is the link to get Hiarcs 12 single processor, just click on it, it is from the
UK, but there is worldwide shipping available.  On the right is the board view of
Deep Hiarcs 12, the Multi-Processor version of the program.  As you can see in
the top 5 rating list above, it is quite a strong program.  Sadly, I don't have it as
it's too expensive for me, but I would if I could, to play it against my Rybka in
Computer vs Computer matches.  It is a bit more expensive as are all the MP
(Multi-Processor) versions of each engine.

"Deep HIARCS 12 is the ultimate multi-core/multiprocessor HIARCS chess
engine capable of utilising up to 8 CPU cores simultaneously. This results in
much faster analysis and playing strength depending on your hardware e.g. on
Dual-Core hardware Deep HIARCS 12 runs nearly twice as fast as on a single
core processor. Deep HIARCS 12 even works on single core processor
systems so you can use it today in the knowledge it can grow with your new
hardware to future proof your purchase decision."

Multiprocessor version of Rybka, also
including the Chess Openings opening
book to improve opening play.

About Rybka 2.3:

"The World’s Strongest Chess Program

For a very long time the difference
between the best chess programs has
been only a few ELO points, but a new
program, Rybka, is now leading all lists.
Rybka is number one in the rating list due
to its revolutionary method of move
selection. The developer of the program -
IM Vasik Rajlich (Hungary) has inserted
algorithms of positional valuation which
are extremely close to the thought
patterns of the super GMs - allowing it to
achieve its amazing results in playing
(undefeated in 20 games against Deep
Junior) and a superior quality of analysis!"
